Release Confirmation
The Big Bang Theory spinoff Stuart Fails to Save the Universe will premiere on HBO Max in July 2026. The announcement was made Sunday at the Stuart Fails to Save the Universe panel at CCXP Mexico City by castmembers Kevin Sussman, Lauren Lapkus, Brian Posehn, and John Ross Bowie.
Plot and Characters
The series centers on Stuart Bloom, the comic book store owner from The Big Bang Theory, who accidentally breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, triggering a multiverse armageddon. Stuart must restore reality with the help of his girlfriend Denise (Lapkus), geologist friend Bert (Posehn), and quantum physicist Barry Kripke (Bowie). Along the way, they encounter alternate-universe versions of beloved Big Bang Theory characters. As the title suggests, Stuart's efforts to save the universe largely fail.
Creative Team and Production
The series is co-created by Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn, and Bill Prady, who also serve as executive producers. Chuck Lorre Productions produces the show in association with Warner Bros. Television. Emmy and Grammy Award-winning musician Danny Elfman, known for his work on Tim Burton films like The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride, will compose the original theme music.
Big Bang Universe Context
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is the fourth show in the Big Bang universe. The original Big Bang Theory ran for 12 seasons on CBS before ending in 2019. The prequel Young Sheldon completed its seven-season run in May 2024. The spinoff Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage, featuring Montana Jordan and Emily Osment, debuted on CBS in October 2024 and is currently airing its second season.
Character Development
Kevin Sussman notes that Stuart takes on a leadership role in this series, though he admits his character is not particularly good at it. Sussman revealed that viewers will see the development of Stuart's relationship with Denise, which was only budding when The Big Bang Theory ended. Brian Posehn teased that the fun comes from watching Stuart fail every week in his mission.
