Event Timing and Location
The 106th Annual Kamehameha Schools Song Contest was held on Friday, May 1, 2026, at Neal S. Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu. Originally scheduled for March 13, the event was postponed due to severe weather from a Kona low storm, making it the first time in the contest's 106-year history to be rescheduled. The competition began at 7:30 p.m., with a preshow starting at 6:30 p.m.
Theme and Cultural Significance
This year's theme, Pauahi Nona Ka Lei, honored Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the visionary founder of Kamehameha Schools established in 1887. Each high school class composed their own coed songs through a haku mele process, creating original mele in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian language). These new compositions were added to Kamehameha's musical library for future generations. The May 1 date coincided with Lei Day, a significant cultural celebration in Hawaii.
Preparation and Performance
Students participated in a final rehearsal at Neal S. Blaisdell Arena on Thursday before the Friday competition. The rehearsal allowed each class to practice in the actual performance space, experience the lighting and arena environment, and receive final guidance from their kumu (teachers). Students reported feeling more prepared and confident than they had been before the original March date.
Historical Significance
The 2026 Song Contest marked a historic moment as the first event in its 106-year legacy to be rescheduled. It was also the first time since May 26, 1921, that the contest was held in May. The rescheduling to Lei Day added spiritual and cultural significance to the event.
