Release and Pricing

Valve's new Steam Controller is officially launching on May 4, 2026 at 1 PM ET. The controller will cost $99 USD, $149 CAD, $149 AUD, £85 in the UK, and €99 in the EU. The price may be slightly higher than originally planned due to increased shipping costs rather than RAM-related issues, according to Valve.

Compatibility and Usage

The Steam Controller does not require a Steam Machine to operate. It works with any computer running Steam and functions as a generic controller for phones as well. Users can transfer their controller profiles and muscle memory from other devices, making it compatible with existing gaming setups across multiple platforms.

Design and Features

The new Steam Controller features a familiar design with dual analog sticks in a symmetrical layout, along with ABXY face buttons and a D-pad. Its most distinctive elements are the pair of large square touchpads below the thumbsticks that offer haptic feedback. The controller also includes four rear buttons positioned under the middle and ring fingers, and uses advanced TMR sensors in the analog sticks to prevent stick drift.

Advanced Technology

The Steam Controller incorporates several advanced features including capacitive touch-sensitive analog sticks that can detect thumb contact to toggle gyroscopic controls. The touchpads are customizable through Steam Input to function as directional buttons, radial wheels, or complex control schemes downloaded from the Steam community. Valve experimented with additional features like touch-sensitive bumpers that didn't make the final cut due to cost, weight, or reliability concerns.

Production and Availability

Valve has already built a significant quantity of Steam Controllers with production capacity for additional units. Unlike the original 2015 Steam Controller, the new version is not entirely assembled by robots. Valve is working on offering replacement parts in partnership with iFixit and is also developing ways to display controller battery life in Steam.
