According to actress Daniela Ruah, both Kensi and Deeks returned to active duty in the field after NCIS: Los Angeles ended. Ruah stated on the NCIS: Partners & Probies podcast that both characters love their work too much to stay away long-term. While they have started a family, including adopting a teenage runaway during the final season and welcoming a newborn, their passion for law enforcement drew them back to fieldwork. Mama Deeks is helping raise the newborn while the couple continues their careers.

Ruah offered her personal theory during the podcast, stating she believes Kensi and Deeks had a daughter. She reasoned, 'I feel like Kensi would have a tough little girl,' drawing on her 14-season understanding of the character. Ruah reflected on the natural progression of Kensi and Deeks' relationship, which began with banter between partners. They went on their first date in Season 5 and got together in Season 6. Ruah expressed enthusiasm about reprising her role as Kensi in the broader NCIS universe. She stated definitively, 'Sure. Absolutely, of course, of course. I love it.' Ruah emphasized she will never tire of the character, saying 'She is me. I am her. I think it would be so fun.' She has already appeared in NCIS's landmark 1000th episode and has directed episodes for both NCIS and the Hawaii spinoff, making a potential return realistic.
