Transfer Announcement
Olivier Rioux, the 7-foot-9 center from Canada, announced on Thursday, April 30, 2026, that he had transferred from the University of Florida to UC Irvine. Rioux posted the news on Instagram, with his new program announcing the transfer shortly after. UC Irvine coach Russell Turner confirmed Rioux's signing and expressed confidence in his potential contribution to the program.
Florida Career
Rioux spent two seasons with the Florida Gators, redshirting as a true freshman during the team's national championship season. During the 2025-26 season, he saw limited action, playing a total of 16 minutes and recording 7 points, 6 rebounds, and an assist. Florida coach Todd Golden had restricted his playing time to late-game situations in blowouts due to the strength of the frontcourt rotation.
UC Irvine Program
UC Irvine is a quality mid-major program in Southern California competing in the Big West Conference. The Anteaters won the Big West regular-season title in the previous season with a 23-12 overall record, including 15-5 in conference play, though they did not advance past the conference tournament. Coach Russell Turner indicated that Rioux's presence and skills align with the program's tradition of dominant front court players.
Rioux's Profile
Rioux is 2 inches taller than former NBA giants Gheorghe Muresan and Manute Bol, and 3 inches taller than Yao Ming, Tacko Fall, and Shawn Bradley. He set a Guinness World Record as the world's tallest teen before stepping foot on campus. Despite his historic stature, he has struggled with the physicality and footwork needed to impact games at the highest collegiate level.
Expectations at UC Irvine
Rioux hopes to find a more consistent path to playing time at UC Irvine compared to his limited role at Florida. Coach Turner expressed belief that Rioux will have an immediate impact and continue to grow within the program's system. Rioux becomes a third-year sophomore and will look to develop his game and contribute more significantly than he did with the Gators.
