Who is El Jardinero
Audias Flores Silva, alias El Jardinero, is a high-ranking member of the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG). He was originally from Huetamo in Michoacán and served as the security chief for CJNG leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho. After El Mencho's death in February 2026, El Jardinero assumed expanded operational control and was considered a potential successor to lead the cartel. He also uses multiple aliases including Comandante, Gabriel Raigosa Plascencia, El Bravo 2, Audi, and Mata Jefes.
Why He Was Captured
El Jardinero was captured in Nayarit on April 27, 2026, by Mexican Navy Special Forces. He was a target for both Mexican and U.S. authorities. The United States offered a $5 million reward for his capture and sought his extradition. He faced multiple federal charges in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia dating from August 13, 2020, including conspiracy to distribute cocaine and heroin for importation to the United States, and illegal firearm possession related to drug crimes.
His Criminal Operations
El Jardinero controlled methamphetamine and synthetic drug production operations across Nayarit, Jalisco, Zacatecas, Michoacán, and Guerrero. He operated clandestine laboratories in central Jalisco and southern Zacatecas for methamphetamine production. He also supervised multiple clandestine airstrips and aircraft used for transporting cocaine, heroin, and other drugs from Central America to Mexico, then distributed them to cells across the United States including California, Texas, Illinois, Georgia, Washington, and Virginia.
Strategic Significance of Capture
His capture came two months after El Mencho's death in February 2026 and represents the second major blow to the CJNG leadership structure. El Jardinero was instrumental in establishing alliances with rival groups like Los Chapitos, managing drug synthetic production including fentanilo, and overseeing the cartel's expansion into several states. His detention is expected to weaken the organization's internal structure and command continuity.
Prior Criminal History
El Jardinero was previously detained in 2016 for suspected participation in an ambush against police in Soyatlán, Jalisco, occurring in 2015, but was released. The U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned Audias Flores in April 2021 and had documented his activities as a regional CJNG commander responsible for managing significant numbers of armed personnel engaged in violent acts against security forces and rival organizations.
