Who He Is
Min Aung Hlaing is one of Myanmar's most powerful military leaders. He was born in 1956 and joined the Myanmar military in 1974 when he was young. He rose through the ranks over many decades, eventually becoming the commander-in-chief of the entire military, which is called the Tatmadaw. This is the highest military position in Myanmar.
The 2021 Military Coup
On February 1, 2021, Min Aung Hlaing led a military coup that took over the Myanmar government. The coup removed the elected civilian government led by Aung San Suu Kyi and her National League for Democracy party. The military claimed there was election fraud in the 2020 elections, but international observers did not find evidence to support this claim. After the coup, Min Aung Hlaing became the head of the military council that now rules Myanmar.
His Current Power
Min Aung Hlaing chairs the State Administration Council, which is Myanmar's ruling junta, or military government. This council makes all major decisions for the country. Under his leadership, the military has cracked down heavily on people who protest against military rule, leading to thousands of arrests, injuries, and deaths.
International Concerns
Many countries and international organizations have condemned Min Aung Hlaing and his military government. The United Nations and various human rights groups have accused the military of serious violations, including killing protesters and committing crimes against humanity. Some countries have placed economic sanctions on Min Aung Hlaing personally, meaning they restrict his access to money and assets.
Military Background and History
Min Aung Hlaing served in Myanmar's military for nearly 50 years. He was involved in various military operations and eventually became the highest-ranking officer. Before leading the 2021 coup, he had already held significant power within the military structure, and the military had influenced Myanmar's government in different ways for decades.
