Reason for Retirement
P.J. Walker announced his retirement after undergoing shoulder surgery on his throwing shoulder during the offseason. According to his agent Marty Magid, the injury has not fully healed. In Walker's statement to 3DownNation, he said: "As I continue to recover from a shoulder injury, I feel this is the right time for me to step away from the game." He made the decision after careful consideration and conversations with his family and agent.
NFL Career Summary
Walker went undrafted out of Temple in 2017 and initially signed with the Colts, spending three years on their practice squad. He made his first NFL start with the Carolina Panthers, where he went 5-4 as a starter over three seasons. He also made two starts for the Cleveland Browns in 2023. Across 21 NFL appearances, he completed 54.6 percent of his passes for 2,135 yards, six touchdowns, and 16 interceptions.
CFL Experience
The Calgary Stampeders signed Walker near the end of the 2024 season after he was released by the Seahawks. He then signed a two-year contract with the Stampeders that included financial incentives for starting games. He appeared in 13 games during the 2025 season, finishing with a 59.3 completion percentage, 395 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, and four interceptions, along with 32 rushing yards and one rushing score.
Notable Professional Achievements
Before his NFL career, Walker impressed in the XFL during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, leading the league in both passing yardage and passing touchdowns. His performance in the XFL helped establish him as a prospect for professional football, though his NFL tenure was marked by inconsistency despite showing capability to play at that level.
