Community Connection
Andre the Giant fell in love with North Carolina's region while wrestling throughout the U.S. South and purchased a ranch about 60 miles east of Charlotte in 1978. He became an integral part of the Ellerbe community, where he could enjoy a slower pace of life despite being one of the most famous athletes in the world. His ashes were spread at his beloved ranch after his death in 1993.
Professional Accomplishments
Born Andre Rene Roussimoff in France, he became a heavyweight wrestling champion in the WWE during the 1970s and 1980s. His iconic 1987 match against Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania III helped launch WWE into a nationwide entertainment force. He also achieved prominence as an actor, notably playing the gentle giant Fezzik in 'The Princess Bride' released the same year.
Community Advocacy
Beyond entertainment, Roussimoff was a thoughtful community member who participated in local civic efforts. In 1990, he taped television and radio spots to oppose a proposed low-level radioactive landfill near Ellerbe, lending his significant influence to protect the community.
Historical Recognition
The roadside marker unveiled in Ellerbe reads: 'Andre The Giant. 1946-1993. Actor and professional wrestler. Was born Andre Roussimoff. Known for role in The Princess Bride in 1987. Lived nearby.' The Rankin Museum has established a permanent exhibit dedicated to his life, featuring books, magazines, his oversized recliner, clothing, and even a skull from one of his prized longhorn cattle.
