The Dispute Over Little Bear Ridge Road
Steppenwolf Theatre Company originally commissioned Little Bear Ridge Road in 2024. When Scott Rudin offered to produce the play's transfer to Broadway, Steppenwolf declined because of allegations against Rudin. When no other producers stepped forward, Metcalf threatened to quit the company unless it relinquished the rights to allow Rudin's involvement. Steppenwolf ultimately agreed, and the production ran on Broadway for eight weeks.
Scott Rudin's Controversial Background
In 2021, multiple former assistants publicly revealed abusive workplace practices by Rudin, with allegations including throwing a phone at an employee and smashing a computer monitor on an assistant's head. These allegations prompted Steppenwolf to initially reject his involvement with Little Bear Ridge Road. Rudin took time away from theater following the reporting.
Metcalf's Defense of Rudin
Metcalf defended her decision to work with Rudin, citing his March 2025 New York Times interview where he discussed his therapy, apologized, and reflected on his behavior. She argued for the possibility of genuine rehabilitation and questioned why she should ask him to attempt it if others weren't willing to be first. Metcalf said the situation is complicated and emotionally difficult for her.
Metcalf's Ongoing Collaboration
During the 2025-2026 Tony season, Metcalf has performed in two Broadway plays, both produced by Rudin. Earlier in the season she starred in Little Bear Ridge Road, and she is currently starring in Death of a Salesman alongside Nathan Lane. The actress described feeling emotional when discussing her rift with Steppenwolf during a New Yorker profile interview.
