Cahill's Assessment
Former England defender Gary Cahill has dismissed the prospect of Max Dowman making Thomas Tuchel's World Cup squad. Speaking to The Standard, Cahill stated: 'I can't really see that. You've got to look at the depth and the personnel he's got to choose from — and there's going to be a hell of a lot of players that will miss out.' Cahill, who featured at three major tournaments for England, emphasized that the sheer quality available to Tuchel makes it unlikely for the young Arsenal player to be selected.
Dowman's Breakthrough Season
Despite his remarkable achievements, Dowman's youth remains a barrier to selection. The 16-year-old made waves during his breakthrough season at Arsenal, becoming the youngest Premier League goalscorer in history and making 11 first-team appearances. His performances have generated calls from some quarters for his inclusion in England's 26-man squad, but Cahill and others believe this summer's tournament comes too early for both player and manager.
Alternative Wildcard Options
Rather than Dowman, Cahill identified Danny Welbeck as the type of wildcard pick England might consider. The Brighton veteran, 35, has scored 16 goals for England and is in outstanding form with five goals in his last eight games for Brighton. Cahill praised Welbeck's timing and also highlighted Nico O'Reilly at Manchester City as a versatile option who could have greater impact than expected.
Competition for Selection
England has exceptional depth across the squad, particularly in midfield where players like Jordan Henderson, Phil Foden, Elliot Anderson, Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, and Morgan Rogers are competing for places. This abundance of established talent at senior level makes it highly unlikely that a 16-year-old, regardless of talent, would be selected for a World Cup squad.
