Current Recovery Status
As of April 30, Luka Doncic is more than four weeks removed from his Grade 2 hamstring strain. He has begun his return-to-play protocol and is ramping up on the court with shooting and controlled movement drills. However, he has not yet been cleared for one-on-one competition, which represents an important threshold where actual game-style competition begins.
Expected Timeline for Thunder Series
Doncic is expected to miss the start of the Western Conference semifinals against the defending-champion Thunder, which begins between May 2-4. A return for Game 1 appears unlikely given the nature of hamstring injuries and Doncic's playing style, which depends on sudden stops, starts, and violent changes of pace. Game 2 also seems doubtful, but Game 3 back in Los Angeles could be a pivot point for his return.
Recovery Approach and Progression
Doncic has taken an aggressive approach to recovery, including a trip to Spain for advanced treatment to expedite healing. His progression is being compared to teammate Austin Reaves, who recovered from an oblique injury and began one-on-one drills roughly a week before returning to play. If Doncic follows a similar arc without setbacks, closer to the five-week mark appears more plausible for his return.
No Official Timeline Announced
Lakers coach JJ Redick has repeatedly stated there is no specific timeline for Doncic's return. The team has maintained publicly that his injury has an indefinite element to it. ESPN's Shams Charania confirmed there is still no clarity on a timeline, though Doncic is starting to ramp up more and progressing through rehabilitation stages.
